Year 6

Welcome to Year 6.  In this year we help to prepare the children for their transition to secondary school.  Children are expected to demonstrate great listening, concentration and effort as well as excellent behaviour, setting a fantastic example to the children lower in the school.  We have lots of extra responsibilities in Year 6 such as Prefects, Eco-team, Playground Leaders and House Captains and we enjoy being ambassadors for the rest of the school.

Important Things to Know

P.E. Kit

Our P.E. lessons are on Wednesdays and Thursdays.  Children need to come to school dressed in their P.E. kits, therefore they do not need to keep a P.E. kit in school.

As a reminder, this is

Navy shorts.

Red Worplesdon T-shirt. A plain red t-shirt is acceptable.

Trainers for outdoor games lessons.

Navy tracksuit for outdoor games lessons.

Please avoid sending your child to school wearing earrings on P.E. days.

Homework

In Year 6, children will receive age appropriate Maths, English and EGPS (English Grammar, Punctuation & Spelling) homework tasks which will be set weekly on Atom Learning. These homework tasks will be based on what your child has practised in class during the week and are designed simply to reinforce and consolidate what they have learnt.

In addition to these weekly homework tasks, the children are expected to complete a minimum of four signed reads per week in their reading diary and please also encourage your children to practise their timestables on TT Rockstars.

Reading

Reading books and diaries should be in school every day.  They will be checked each Wednesday.

The School uses a wide variety of reading schemes that directly link with the National Bookband Scheme.

We expect to see four signed reads per week.

If your child is having difficulty with choosing books then please ask them to come and speak to one of the Year 6 team.  We do not have a set day to renew or change reading books but we will give the children an opportunity to do this at several times during the week.

Maths

In order to enrich your child’s experience in school, we would like to suggest some ways you can help at home:

Snacks

Please ****  NO NUTS  ****

Children are allowed to bring in a piece of fresh fruit or vegetables to eat at break time and are encouraged to have a bottle of water in the classroom to keep hydrated.

Parents

If there are any questions or concerns, please drop in to see the Class Teacher or leave a note in your child’s reading diary.  We are here to help.
